According to their latest survey results of over 1,000 respondents, TodaysMama.com revealed that 85% of Moms across the United States are trimming their holiday budgets due to concern about the long-term economic outlook, specifically:
14% plan to cut holiday spending by an astounding 75%
32% will cut holiday spending by 50%
66% believe it will take two to three years for the economy to recover
Okay, we get it — honestly, you don't have to beat parents over the head with a mailbox full of sale flyers to know that life is too short to worry about the little things, like, what the cool kids want and the things that mine aren't, you know, getting this year, again — so, why am I still feeling so gosh-darned Scroogy?!?
Apparently, I'm not the only one — my youngest daughter (she's 7) had only one…COUNT 'EM…one thing on her Christmas list, this year.
I would like a American Girl doll for Christmas they are pretty and I like the movie and so I can play with my friends that already have one but I know they are spensive and that is all I want for Christmas for real.
Love,
Mini-me
Hear that, it's the sound of my heart breaking (for real!) and what's a mother to do?
[bites lower lip]
I dunno, so I immediately sought solace in my Twitter friends:
only one item – an American Girl Doll – she must have seen how much
they $$$. Oh, holy crap!!!"
Aaaand, I was honestly surprised by the responses:
|
AMauiBlog @thompsonclan6 I love looking at American Girls catalog but never could afford it. Too bad it's so expensive!

oldsillybear @thompsonclan6 My oldest asked only for a PSP. "I don't need clothes or candy, this costs enough."

blondemomblog @thompsonclan6 My neighbor has given me not one but two postcards to get the American Girl catalogs…I keep "losing" them. ๐

Seriously, who knew American girls could be so, you know, expensive. As if, I needed any help feeling all Scroogy, this year.
Then, my 9 year-old son gave me his letter to Santa…YES…he still believes and I'm not in the best frame of mind to change that, anytime soon.
I would like the new Madden 2009 with Brett Favre on the cover oh and a telescope would be great or leave whatever you think I deserve like my mom says. I will always love Christmas anyways.
Love,
The Boy
I think The Boy deserves a whole lot more than Santa will be able to provide, this year, dammit and I don't remember worrying about price tags as a kid.
Why should they?
Then I received one last Tweet that helped put it all into perspective.

I remember sitting in front of the television (we only had one, growing up) and how my twin brother and I would be ready to take notes, during the commercial breaks for Toys R Us (the one and only place Santa partnered with to get toys, really) with a bowl of Captain Crunch by my side.
Our lists were long and I still remember my favorite toy (a Chrissy doll with hair that grew when you pulled her ponytail) but, funny how I can't seem to remember what I didn't get.
Sad in a way, really. And I can't help but wonder, you know, what's on Angela Jolie's Christmas list, this year. On the other hand, maybe our kids will grow up rich in many
OTHER ways.
Morale of the story: Never judge a kid by his PSP, or something like that.
So, what's on your kid's list this year – wanna trade?

My daughter wants an iPod nano. It was going to be pretty much all she got till her aunts and uncles decided to chip in and make it a combined Christmas/birthday (Jan 10) gift, freeing up our Christmas budget for some surprises. I didn’t have the Internet as a kid, but I distinctly remember making very long lists with the help of the Sears Wish Book.

My oldest son has always been a worry wart when it comes to money (unfortunately) so all he wants is the newest Guitar Hero for his PS2. I asked if he was sure he didn’t want a newer gaming system all together (thinking it’d make a good ‘family’ gift) and he said “No, the PS2 works” in the saddest most downtrodden voice you could imagine.

My kids got spoiled with the Wii last year. I reminded my kids that Santa was extra generous last year…that it was their turn to have a special Christmas. I told them not to expect such a large gift this year as it’s another family’s turn for Santa to spoil them.
They seemed to get it. Go figure.

I hear you. My kids are still to young to really request anything to big. However, we just moved, and my husband just got a job. Our van died, so we just had to buy a new one, so our budget..is well non existent. I usually have all the Christmas shopping done by now… I’m a clearance shopper all year long. ๐ This year, I was not able to do all that much though. So, my kids are getting a whole lot of not much. My son wants a remote control dinosaur. My middle daughter wants a Barbie House, and can I tell you that there is no such thing as a good one anymore?? What happened to the ones from when we were kids?? My youngest girl wants the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, which she will luckily get cause of my MIL. We have never been big on a huge Christmas cause we think it ends up bad in the end. (can we say SPOILED) They are usually happy with what they get..however just one year, I would like to be able to give them a decent Christmas, without feeling like I’m going into debt?? Despite it all, I hope we all have a great Christmas! Good luck with the American Doll… My daughter mentioned it once, but luckily she isn’t old enough, to keep picking away at me about it.
Happy Holidays!

Great post. Kids presents at this time of year can get hugely expensive. I think that a lot of thought should to go in to get a good, wholesome gift. The AG dolls are actually good for nurturing and they also have books to help girls cope with growing up.

Bluegrass Mama, erin and my dear Mrs. Schmitty:
Our family also is big on asking for our kids’ wish lists and gifting them with the really cool stuff that, you know, we don’t. Garth (not his real name) and I know we’re lucky, like that. Santa does what he can and then there’s “the family gift” addressed to “Everyone!” which is usually the biggest box under the tree. I really believe that it’s pretty much the reason why my older girls had fun telling everyone that they got Fuggs (fake Uggs) last year!
Monica: Sounds like you’ve got a pretty good handle on the holidays and I wish you and your family the BEST of everything, this year and next!!!
Doll Clothes Gal: I really do love the idea behind the American Girl line and was lucky enough to have been invited to the premier of Kit Kitteridge in NYC on my youngest girl’s 7th birthday, last summer. And, you’re right. Raising 3 girls, the body books have been an invaluable resource in helping to explain the yucky side of being a girl. The dolls really are lovely (rating a zero on the skank meter) but, I just wish they weren’t so gosh-darned expensive.
Happy Holidays to you, too!

Hey, I remember making my list from the commercials, too!
My eldest (12) wants the LazerTag set. $60. He doesn’t really want much else. Well, he does, but he knows better than to ask for a handful of $60-each Xbox 360 games.
My daughter’s Santa list is 10 items, all of the other $10 variety. (She’ll score big!)
My youngest boy (6) just did his letter to Santa, with me steering him toward putting on items I’ve already bought for him. (I’m sneaky like that.)

My oldest wants an Ariel bike (uh…hello I cannot find one ANYWHERE even on eBay that is the right size.) She also wants a Barbie mermaid bath set (done) and she wants a Bratz snow village from last year that Santa somehow “dropped” out of his sleigh.
Cough.
The 3-year-old she diva wants a pink sparkly keyboard, a princess phone, and black boots like mommy.
No kiddin’!
Oh they are both crazy about the Furreal Friends Pony that costs a million dollars but I know they will get the rollover puppy that is a more reasonable price. I’m in good with Santa. ๐

Oh good heavens. I’ve already given up. There is no way I can pull this Christmas off.
My son works so hard at guitar and piano and he really he is great at both so he really deserves what he’s asking for.
A $2,000 Gretsch. When I explained that he had mistaken me for a wealthy heiress, he “agreed” that a $600 Gretsch would hold him off for awhile.
Does anyone need a maid?

I cried out when I read about the Chrissie Doll–I had not thought of her in ages. She was huge and with the hair that came out of her head. She wore baby clothes. At some point her hair/pony tail came out all together. I seem to recall sticking a broom handle in the hole on her head. Nice. I also placed her on a stool at the top of the stairs and scared my sister.
Hey, did you live in NJ when you had the Chrissie doll? I lived in Edison, NJ, before returning to the UK. I came back to the US to go to college in PA.
As for the American Girl doll. Think about whether your daughter plays with dolls now. Do her friends have dolls? Does she talk about wanting a doll when she returns from a friend’s house? Does she like to do imaginative play with dolls and stuffed animals?
I have two daughters: 10 and 12. The 12 yo got an American Girl doll at 8. We got a doll that looked like her…she was thrilled. The doll was well-taken care of. Lovingly dressed and put to bed each night. She played with friends and by herself. She devoured the books as well.
While we were in NYC I took my daughters to American Girl Place. The youngest then 6 insisted that she wanted a doll. We got her one…it was her main gift that Christmas. She rarely played with the doll. She never dressed it. She didn’t read the books. I think she wanted one because her friend had one.
Check consignment stores for dolls. e-bay? craigslist? Contact friends with older girls…you mighjt find a teen willing to sell their doll to you.

She rarely played with the doll. She never dressed it. She didn’t read the books. I think she wanted one because her friend had one.
Check consignment stores for dolls. e-bay? craigslist? Contact friends with older girls…you mighjt find a teen willing to sell their doll to you.

Jamie: Heh, I dribbled coffee all over mahself (your drawl is catchy) when I read about Bratz falling out of Santa’s sleigh. I have GOT to remember that one!
mannequin: I hear ya’ and would totally consider hiring myself out, too, if I weren’t so gosh-darned tired of cleaning my OWN house! Good luck.
Mom on the Run: Yep, born and raised in New Jersey and worked in Edison (for real) for quite a few years, before children. Thank you so much for all of your great advice. It really does help.
Hugs to you all!
Liz (a.k.a. I.M.A. Dork)

Yet another reason to love Tar-shay.

First of all, you have some wonderful kids there, which of course is a testament to the parents.
Second, my daughter’s list includes a Wii and American Girl Doll this year. (among other things).
Third, you know what is different from when we were kids with the long list? Our parents didn’t hem and haw or worry about even thinking about getting us everything on our lists. We made long lists, because we knew that our presents would be one (or more) of the items in the list. And we were happy with that. By having a long list, we were still SUPRISED because we never knew what we were going to actually find under the tree in the morning.
I think many kids are far less greedy than we think. (The good ones anyway) and that our own desire to fulfill dreams makes us try a little too hard and give a little too much, which is why we all have a house filled with more toys and things than any child could ever possibly play with let alone appreciate.

I don’t favor the Our generation dolls from target very much after a few years their skin turns a funny color, Also, their hair is horrible, and VERY hard to care for. However, there are some new dolls at toys r us similarly priced (i think within $5 of Our Generation) that are madame alexander dolls that are much higher quality and have much better hair. by all means buy our generation clothes but they also have madame alexander clothes at toys r us. good luck!
