Now that it’s October, the beginning of cold and flu season (a.k.a. creeping crud) here in Jersey, I’m very excited to be partnering with the good folks over at Puritans Pride in accepting their One Small Change challenge: to make one very personal (yet simple) change toward healthier living and then committing myself to remain accountable by posting my progress in a three-part blog series, throughout the month.
Okay, that’s great, but why?!?
That’s a very fair question and I am MORE than happy to tell you EXACTLY why, thanks: because I’m hoping to help encourage other folks to slow down, take a few minutes out of every day, to think about simple ways you can take good care of YOU, too!
I’m going to start by cleaning out the most cluttered area in the house: my head
I am not a runner (never have been, never will be and I’m okay wit-it), but I love to hike and have gone on “many wonderful and amazing explores” with my kids, which is also pretty much like running a marathon, anyway, just so you know.
[sound of crickets, chirping]
Aaaaaanyway, getting outside and (more importantly) away from the house was also a great way to air out my mommy-brain. Sadly, thanks to a reoccurring back ailment (re-reoccurring more often, than not), we don’t hike as often as I’d like to.
So, now that it’s October, my brain is just itching to take a hike and I made plans to take you along with me (via my camera) to show you some of my favorite trails.
This morning, however, my sinuses and my back decided to form a tag-team in an ugly throwdown. Guess who won? Go ahead, I’ll wait. RIGHT!!! My body was all like, “No hike for you!”, I mean me.
So, needless to say, I was feeling a little sorry for myself, because my head really could use some serious airing out (literally and figuratively), but I grabbed the camera, some tissues and…verrrrrrrrrry slowwwwwwwwwly…headed out into the backyard, instead.
Guess what? There’s really not all that much going on in our yard, in October. Still, I put my eye up to the viewfinder (the less-booger-y one, you’re welcome!) and tried (really hard) to concentrate on the first thing that came into focus.

This moth reminded me of how I’ve been questioning my mothering skills, lately (because moth is short for mother, it’s how my mind works, see what I mean?!?): then again, living with so many people in one house, I’ve been trying to accept the fact that there will be AT LEAST one person who will NOT be happy with me (most especially, me) and that’s okay.
I’m doing my best, dagnabit. That should be more than enough, even for me, right?!?
Then I found another full house, which is a perfect visual analogy of our house: needs some work (a major reno, even), but still a home nonetheless and there’s something strangely peaceful about its imperfections.
Finally, I entered back into my house (through the front door) with a whole new perspective on things and made a mental note to try to be JUST AS accepting with my own shortcomings, in other words: well, hey, it’s nice to see ya’…come right in and relax…it’s going to be okay…you’re going to be just fine.
How about you? You ready to make a little change (figuratively and literally)?!? EXCELLENT!!!

Curiously enough, finishing up this blog post, I found myself breathing a little easier, my head felt much clearer and, well, that is most definitely a good thing.
Soooooo, thanks for that 🙂
