It's been a month since Hurricane Sandy made landfall here in New Jersey (I blogged about our experience, once we got power back) and although the news crews and Weather Channel folks have since moved on to other more immediate and pressing matters (sadly, there is bad stuff happening in the world, all the time) reminders of just how cataclysmic this storm really was remain and, well, the devistation isn't going away anytime soon.
I realize that some folks may be growing tired or even a little weary of hearing about yet another Sandy story (I'm looking at you, dude on my Facebook stream who insisted that Jersey should just get over it already) trust me, we get it.
On the other hand, a large percentage of my husband's customers are small business owners who lost both their homes AND their livelihood, excuse my Jersey when I tell you: he hears it ALL friggin' day. In fact, there are people STILL living it, every day.
Either way, the sense of helplessness is incredibly overwhelming.
So, when my good friend, and fellow NJ Digital Mom, Elizabeth Norton (that's her up there with one of her adorable sons!) suggested we get together and help give back by volunteering to serve dinner to the good folks of Samaritan's Purse (a non-denominational Christian organization providing relief to victims of war, poverty and natural disaster) I was all, like, FRIGGIN'YAH!
I got to share the experience with my oldest daughter and, honestly, she and I were a little nervous about how the evening would play out.
Samaritan's Purse volunteers are helping out folks hardest hit here in Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth County (where we live) traveling from as far south as North Carolina, Mississippi and Texas, removing trees and cleaning out homes (they call it "mud outs") so, Holly and I can ONLY IMAGINE the stories they've been listening to.
I mean, some of the volunteers are away from their families for weeks at a time.
At the end of the day, the volunteers reconvene at a church in Toms River, NJ (just a couple of miles from where my folks live) and, frankly, I was expecting most (if not all) of these poor people to be done for the day.
I mean, like not looking forward to ANY small talk sort of, really done.
Holly and I were in charge of putting together the cookie trays (thanks, A LOT, Elizabeth) that were donated by the good folks at Pepperidge Farms and, well, where else better to exercise one's willpower than a church…YO!
Then we set up and started serving dinner, also donated by the equally awesome folks at KFC, and soon my fear of "Okay, so what am I going to say to these people, anyways?" was put to rest.
"Thank you SO MUCH for what y'all doin' here, Ma'am!"
Wait, what?!?
"No, no, no, THANK YOU!!!"
This went on all night, the Samaritan's Purse folks kept thanking each of us NJ Digital Moms, ALL NIGHT.
Although, my and Beth's new friend Jim seemed MORE than happy to help indulge us in a little PDA and then text his buddies back home in Texas with: two fantastic Jersey Girls that's made my day!!!!
Then, the volunteers got back "down to bih'ness" and, if felt moved enough, began sharing their day of listening to survivor stories and helping victims find a higher purpose in their suffering.
That's where they lost me.
Confession: we are not a church-going family (kindly heathens, nonetheless) and the folks here come from a very different world: we say soda, you say "What kind of Coke y'all want?" followed by "Bless your heart!" if need be.
On this night, we were invited into their circle and joined in their prayers. Holly and I could not help but feel as if we had just become a part of something much, much BIGGER.We were ALL here for the same purpose: to help us get past that overwhelming sense of helplessness and understand the true meaning of Jersey Strong.
It was an extreme honor and privilege serving the awesome group of volunteers from Samaritan's Purse, alongside my fellow NJ Digital Moms, Beth, Elizabeth and Erica.
The afterglow of giving back: did I mention, Elizabeth coordinated the ENTIRE evening AND she is like 36 months pregnant or something?!?
Serving food to 108 people had NUH'THIN on trying to get this woman to sit down…because, HELLLLOOOOO!!!!…my borked-up back hurt just looking at you walk funny like that 🙂

Hey Melisa,
Yes, I figured powerful would play into the evening, but man I did NOT expect the night to go like it did. Thanks for stopping by and reading about it <3

What a wonderful group of people. It is during times like this, when people come together and make miracles happen. Good for you and oldest for being a part of it.
For that FB commenter, obviously he has never had to deal with the aftermath of such a disaster, and if he does, I hope people show him more compassion than he has for those affected by Sandy.

Thank you, Tara! I understood where he was coming from, there are areas of the U.S. that get nailed by storms all the time. However, I felt the same way as you, a little compassion goes a long way.

Liz, thank you so much for coming out and providing dinner for the staff and volunteers, and for your kind words in this post. It is such an honor for Samaritan’s Purse to be able to serve your community.

What an amazing evening. Thanks for sharing it with us. It touched me deeply. I know that disasters happen all over, but when you lose your house and your livelihood, well that’s a double blow that’s hard to get over. You have to be strong to face the wrath of nature and I think Jerseyites have been very strong. Compassion does go a long way and I hope that FB dude finds his quickly.

It was so great meeting you and Holly. I didn’t know how the evening would go either or how I’d make small talk with everyone! I don’t even know how to adequately describe the evening, I’m just glad I was a part of it.

Liz, I am sitting here in tears, literally. Being “born and raised” up north – I totally loved your Northerner view on southern hospitality lol. Been transplanted down south for the past 26 years and the overwhelming love and sense of being part of a bigger family is what the south personifies. Let disasters strike anywhere and you will find Southerners right there ready to help at a moments notice. I wish that everyone had that same roll up your sleeves and pitch in attitude. It’s definitely what this world needs more of that’s for sure.
Bless you all for taking care of the volunteers…I know they walked away with a newfound determination and renewed sense of purpose seeing how thankful y’all were, bless your heart.
I couldn’t resist…

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to stop by. Your words mean so much to me. I really do need to get down south, dammit.

That’s so wonderful that you and your daughter took the time to help out these volunteers! It’s so incredible to hear the story of people from all over dropping their lives for a few weeks and traveling to help those in need. It really reminds you how many caring, giving people there are out there. Hurricane Sandy has been a tragedy that I think many are still reeling from, but New Jersey will get past this thanks to amazing people like you and all the other volunteers helping out!

Love this! I can’t believe all the people who did it all “right” and are still waiting for their insurance money so they can rebuild. There’s a serious level of dysfunction in the way our systems are functioning. It’s awesome to see that people are still giving back in the communities there and pulling together.

Only the people who experienced the disaster would know about their real experience and I’m very impressed that you guys did something back to the ones who helped you.
