So, my kids made a list of things to do while away on our summer vacation (first family getaway in six years, btw) and my husband, Garth [not his real name] and I were pleasantly surprised to have checked off every single check box (even the "no arguing" one) except for one:
- Aquarium (Boston)
As a slight compromise — since, the kids didn't seem to mind our decision to stay on Cape and visit Provincetown, instead — we promised our son (who was looking forward to checking out the USS Constitution, as well) to make a quick stop in Fall River, MA (birthplace of Emeril, YO!) and see just what the heck kind of boat is sitting out there, in the water, under the bridge, in Mount Hope Bay and all.
"It's called a battleship, Mom!!!"
This was our first trip to Battleship Cove and, well, my 10-year-old son has been into military history since, well, my twin brother is full-time army and having attended his first deployment ceremony way back in 2004.
"Aaand that's a navy destroyer, a submarine and Russian Corvette!!!"
Actually, they were museums, floating out there, with self-guided tours (YAY!) for all to see. Who knew?
The boy was stoked about being on the USS Massachusettes and the girls, well, it was a really pretty day and they were happy just to be able to walk around and NOT have to spend the time, sitting in the car, cramped with suitcases, for the next 5 or 6 hours.
Until later, anyway.
Teens + Camera = Big Time Posers
Don't tell 'em I told you, or anything, but they looked like they were, you know, actually having fun, for a change.
Some more submarine antics.
Because, you can take the girls outta Jersey, but you sure can't take the Jersey outta the girl, it seems.
Me? Well, I don't do tight, or enclosed (oh, and very high) places; sort of freak me out, a little, actually.
My husband, Garth [not his real name] was surprised that I stayed still, long enough, or even smiled, when he took this picture of me and the kids, checking out the innards of the USS Lionfish submarine.
I think it helped that the ships, subs and stuff were all self-guided tours. I could leave, push the kids aside and run, whatever, or whenever I wanted and a lot of the original equipment was torn out to make room for scaredy cats, like me.
By the end of the day, we were all pretty much done, though (Hope fell asleep, standing up) and we HAD to leave, because there was a wedding getting ready to start.
What?
If you look real close at the pic (above) you can even see some of the bridesmaids. To each his own, I guess. Besides, it was a nice day for a battleship wedding, YO!

I’m with you – not a fan of closed spaces! But the ship looks fun to explore!
I still wouldn’t get married on it though.

You’ve never mentioned that you were the plaid shoe family. I feel left out.
