Marketing to Moms: What Mombloggers Are Really Reading – I’ve Got Your Content, Right Here!

This-full-house-delurk-2

Okay, in real life, I'm a mom with 4 kids, 2 cats, a sock-eating chocolate lab (who thinks he's one of my kids) 1 very over-worked husband (who happens to look A LOT like Garth Brooks) and way too much laundry.

Got it.

Even though I'm just another mom — albeit, living out loud and in full view of, well, everyone who has ever visited This Full House of dingy whites and mismatched socks — my reasons for deciding to go ahead and hit the publishing button haven't changed much.

Riiiight.

I may only be from Jersey — seriously, we all know what those moms are like — but, some of my best friends are moms (with blogs) who are used to getting by on less (barely!) or, have become quite good at parenting by the seat of their sweat pants and I'm pretty sure they haven't been to Disney, either!

So, why aren't the men (and women) in dark suits reading them…I mean, us?

Don't get me wrong.  I have NOTHING against dark suits.  My husband wears one and he doesn't read my blog, either.

What I find utterly frustrating is seeing the same faces (and blogs) featured on, well, ANYTHING that has to do with us so-called digital moms.

You know, people (mostly women) like me, who spend way too much time on the internet, learning about ways I can be a better mother, wife, person, whatever or searching for information about the food I choose to buy for my family, or fun things to do, right in our own backyard and then sharing stuff that just might make someone else's life a little easier.

The nerve?

Mom-101 is a blogger (you know, her name is Liz but she happens to be very, very smart) who hates the term mommyblog and it sort of annoyed me, too (a little) and even though my kids are older, now (6 years from when I started blogging, actually) I secretly still like it when they call me mommy.

The men in the dark suits, not so much.

Because, in the marketing world, there is only one type of "mommyblogger" and she's got a husband, significant other, or an understanding member in her immediate family, who is more than willing to stay home to watch the kids, because she's probably appearing on the Today Show…AGAIN!

Frankly, I canNOT relate.

Some may say it's just a case of sour grapes.  That's okay, I like sour stuff.  What I do NOT enjoy is being constantly reminded of how competitive the blogging world has become and — though, I had plenty of chances to do some really cool stuff — being a mom is complicated enough, already.

So, why blog about it?

[heavy sigh]

Yes, I've got children (they are way smarter than me, too) and in writing about the trials and tribulations of raising kids, I have been nurturing my blog and myself (as a mom) too.

Want to know what moms are shopping for, reading about, praying for???

[shrugs]

Try visting with more than just one mom blogger — I don't mean Dooce, either –  and if you STILL having trouble deciding where to start, feel free to visit my links page (of course, Google blogrolls are broken and decides now is a really good time to, you know, NOT work right…UGH!) seriously, it's filled with food bloggers, crafty bloggers, review bloggers, a couple of dads and podcast peoples, you name it.

Because, I know plenty of OTHER bloggers who would be more than happy to tell you exactly what moms are burning in their feed readers!

After getting through all the dirty laundry, of course.

Oh, and if you've got a product
that happens to repel dust (FOREVER!) and you're dying to get the word out,
contact me at This Full House Reviews.

'Cause I know a lot of people who might be interested in hearing about THAT, too!

I couldn’t agree more. There are so many great voices out there (and so many opportunities) that more people need to get heard (and listened to) by companies.

Hi, I’m new to your blog and new to blogging itself and I loved what you said here. I love the connection blogging gives to women (and men I’m sure). My kids are teens now, but I enjoy reading about all the varied experiences others are having in living and raising their families (or not).

I represent a company, and I’m listening! I’m currently subscribed to all the “top blogs” right now and all the others too (I think I’m at 348 feeds now?) – precisely because there is so much great content.
I was thinking about this and planning on doing an under-appreciated mom blogger post. This is the kick in the pants I needed – look for it soon, thanks!

I was just explaining this to a client the other day. Just because a mom is not, for example, a “WalMart Mom” does not mean she’s not worthy of an invite. There are so many smart articulate bloggers out there who are just as worthy of invites to these corporate events.
Hmmmm. Am I one of those lists of yours?
