George Carlin died, yesterday and – though, the man seemed to enjoy breaking the boundaries of good taste – his humor never failed to leave me speechless, or gasping for breath and nearly peeing my pants in absolute fits of laughter. Especially, after having kids (Kegels be darned!) when I found myself empathizing with Mr. Carlin’s need to challenge conventional wisdom.
My parents immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and he learned English from watching old westerns on television and he soon found out that the most successful way to include himself in conversation was by extensive use of..well…curse words.
No, Mr. Carlin’s material was definitely NOT family-friendly. But, it was real and often times hit a very raw nerve – especially, in middle-class America and the furor over his bit about "The Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television" is legendary.
Which, inspired me to write a parentally motivated (G) rated list of my own.
The Seven Words You CANNOT SAY in My House:
- Decaffeinated
- Stupid
- Diet
- Ovulating
- Chargeit (Yeah, it’s one word!)
- Laundry
- Housewife
The Seven Words You WILL NOT SAY in My House:
- Decaffeinated
- Privacy
- Overslept
- New
- One
- Irreplaceable
- Twinkies
The Seven Words You MUST SAY in My House:
- Share
- Clearance
- Please
- Because
- Enough
- Antibiotic
- Childproof
The Seven Words My Kids HAVE SAID in My House…A Whole Lot, Lately:
- Damn
- Fart
- Crap
- Butthead
- Unfair
- No
- Annoying
The Seven Words I WOULD LOVE TO SAY:
- We
- Are
- Moving
- To
- A
- Bigger
- House
R.I.P. George Carlin – your words will be missed – in my house, anyway!

What a thoughtful tribute you have made to George Carlin. I was shocked by the news. Nice to see that he was working right up to the end and didn’t seem to suffer.
Must not say decaffeinated! priceless.

That’s a great list. We’re fighting with our five-yr-old over Green Day songs he can/cannot listen to, so this list is timely. In re: “bad words,” I tell my son that bad words in songs are sometimes OK, but that he can’t say any bad words until he’s a real rock star with shows and everything. He’s somehow impressed…

I went to see Carlin as part of a college trip. Loved it.
Was especially creeped out when DH told me about the obit in the paper this morning. Creeped out why? Because last night I was cleaning out a hodge-podge box that had souvie stuff in it and there was a Carlin ticket stub from when hubby went to see him a few years ago. It had mostly junk but among the few scrapbook items was the ticket stub. Weird.
Sad to hear the news as I thought he was great. Thanks for sharing your 7 words!

In Carlin’s early days he was hilarious – but as he aged I felt his comedy was rather like listening to Redd Foxx. Sad.

I think he was a classic;I always laughed even if I wasn’t in the mood;just his delivery alone!
I read something in an article today about him that really made me think…I will paraphrase what he said..
We have to be very careful with words. When we learn a new word, we associate an idea with that word and then in the future, refer to that one idea we have ingrained. That’s not a good thing..
love your list;love your blog!

I think rather than the 7 words, you should have looked to “A place for my Stuff.”
“A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it.”
“A house is a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get… more stuff”
“Sometimes ya gotta move, got to get a bigger place. Why? No more room for your stuff.”
“You ever notice how other people’s stuff is sh-t and your sh-t is stuff? You say, get your sh-t outta here, there’s no room for my stuff”
