30 Tiny Moments – Day 2: Times when I just can’t see the Doofus, for the trees.

There was a time – not so long ago, really – when I enjoyed sleep (I mean, actually slept) and it took every bit of strength – whatever I had left from the day before – just to get up in the morning.  I mean, just the thought of having to stand, erect, was enough to make me want to jump right back into bed and pull the covers over my head.

Sounds good, yes?

Yet, one of the few things that helped see me through was that, one day – once all of  my children were in school and I was home alone – perhaps, I would miss all the chaos .

Surprisingly enough, I don’t!

[see picture above]

He follows me, everywhere, even after being scolded for the 100th
time not to and – whenever I do get the chance to sit – he settles down close
enough so that at least one part of his body is touching mine.

Even now, as I power-up for the day, he lies at my feet with one paw gently resting on my toes and later, he’ll follow me as I complete my chores and try not to kill myself, by tripping over him, AGAIN.

Get out of my way – ya’ BIG DOOFUS!

Then, the kids come home and he knows – all bets are off – it’s the
end of mommy-time and he’ll want to be let outside.  No matter the
weather, he’ll just sit and watch the birds fiddle around the feeders
and keep a weary eye out for intruders.

BARK…BARK…BARK…BARKITY…BARK…BARK!

Stupid squirrels!

After supper, MORE homework and it’s time to chase kids into the
shower and…DANG…another last minute report…and at the end of the
day, I can’t even sit, because there’s dog snot all over the living
room window and I getSO tired, I can’t even talk.

Mumble…mumble…stupid dog…mumble.

Still.

The end of the day does come, FINALLY, and we’ll climb the stairs, together, and he’ll drop heavily to the floor with a very
loud…OOOMMPH!…as I turn out the light and pull the covers over my head.

This, my friends, is a day in the life of a Doofus-dog.

Last night was a bear – it was 10:00 o’clock and the kids were
just getting to bed – and I was still being handed poor math grades,
attitude from a cranky 6-year-old and a surly teenager, oh and I forgot
to print out my son’s notes for his report on Roosevelt.

"But, it’s due tomorrow!"

SNAP.

"FUH-GET ROOSEVELT!"

[takes deep breath]

I know, it was stupid of me to holler so.

[shrugs shoulders]

You see, sometimes it IS really hard to see the forest from the trees –
especially, when your a parent living on copious amounts of caffeine
and very little sleep – but, I also believe that children just have to
learn that there are times when a mother HAS to put her foot down.

[turns out the lights and blows kisses goodnight]

Aaaaand pray that it doesn’t land anywhere near their collective little butts!

Doofusandgarth

Oh, no – et tu Doofie?!?!? – even the dog sought refuge in Garth’s
(not his real name) lap, but the kids got up on time, The Boy finished
his report, the girls made their beds and they ALL kissed me goodbye,
this morning.

[shrugs shoulders]

Oh, and I learned that…um…perhaps my enjoying a little quiet time, alone, doesn’t make me a bad mother and being a Doofus is…just maybe…NOT so dumb.

We moms need our alone time too. Unfortunately, we also have to keep reminding ourselves of that!
